ACADEMIC ADVISING

Academic advising is a cooperative effort between the student, CHESS and COS Advising Office, and the Department of Biological Sciences. Professional and faculty advisors assist students in many facets of their academic planning and their progression at UNC Charlotte. However, the student is responsible for their academic schedule, curriculum planning, and meeting the degree and general education requirements.

ADVISING QUESTIONS

1. How do I know if I have a hold on my account and when I can register?

To check your registration status or if you have an advising hold on your account login to my.charlotte.edu. Then under the Academic Resources heading click on the Registration link. Next click on the Check Registration Status link, and then the View Holds link. Your registration appointment time is determined by the cumulative hours earned and is a specific date/time when registration is first available to you. Details of appointment times can be found on the Office of the Registrar’s website.

2. Who is my advisor?

If you are a PRE-BIOLOGY or BIOLOGY MAJOR, you should have an assigned advisor who is listed on your General Student Record. Login to my.charlotte.edu, then under the Academic Resources heading click on the Student Records link. Next click on the General Student Record link.

3. How do I make an appointment with my advisor?

If you are a Pre-Biology Major, you can sign up for an advising appointment with your assigned academic advisor through Connect or you can drop by the CHESS and COS Advising Office.

If you are a Biology Major, you can sign up for an advising appointment with your assigned faculty advisor through Connect. If your advisor does not have appointments available through Connect you may email your advisor to schedule an appointment. To find where your advisor’s office is located, please go to the People menu.

A few things to remember:

  • Do not wait until the last minute to make an advising appointment! Schedule your advising appointment well in advance of your registration appointment time. Failure to do so could prevent you from registering on time.
  • Faculty advisors are not able to provide advisement over the phone or via email.
  • Faculty advisors will only meet with their assigned advisees.

4. If I do not have an advising hold, do I have to meet with my advisor?

Technically, no, you do not. However, all students should consider meeting with their academic advisor to evaluate their progress in the program and discuss future academic plans. Students who have completed 85 or more earned hours towards their degree program should absolutely plan on meeting with their advisor to prepare for graduation.

5. How do I repeat a Biology course?

Biology Major: To be eligible to repeat a course (or register for a repeated course), you need to complete this form requesting a Repeat Override. If your previous grade is an F, a repeat override is not necessary. Here are details from the Registrar about repeating a course. You will be notified by email regarding the status of your request. If you choose, please register for the course or add your name to the wait list as space allows. If eligible, the repeated course is automatically chosen for grade replacement unless you opt-out. Details regarding grade replacement can be found here. Please see the academic calendar for deadlines to opt out of or make changes to grade replacement.

Any Other Major: We follow the recommendations from the registrar that indicates that a student’s major advisor or department is responsible for issuing the repeat override
