GRADUATE STUDENT Teaching RECOGNITIONS
Each Spring at the Annual Biological Sciences Symposium, we recognize the achievements of our graduate students who work as outstanding teaching assistants in lower level and uppper level undergraduate lab or lecture courses. A cell for nomininations is requsted on each end of semester TA evaluation form completed by the faculty superviosr. In addition a call for noiminations is made in the Spring to all faculty as well as graduate students themselves to nominate or self nominate for these recognitions. The Graduate Programs Committee meets to discuss all entries holisitically.

2019-2020 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
The Center for Graduate Life is pleased to call for nominees. One award will be given at the Doctoral level and one at the Master’s level. Nominations must be received by February 10, 2020.
In order to nominate a TA, please do the following:
1. Email the TA’s name, ID number, email address, degree and program title to Daniel Jones (Daniel.Jones@uncc.edu)
2. Inform the TA that you have nominated them
Daniel will contact each nominee to help them with their application. Please note that although Dr. Judith Krauss will continue to be involved in the award process, Daniel will supervise all aspects of the award and all questions should be sent to him at Daniel.Jones@uncc.edu.The winners will be announced at a ceremony on April 3, 2020.
The Provost’s Doctoral Teaching Fellow program is being replaced with this initiative offered through the Center for Graduate Life. Doctoral students who meet the following criteria are invited to apply. Interested graduate students should apply here by March 30, 2020.
- Hold a Fall 2020 – Spring 2021 teaching assistantship and are eligible to serve as instructors of Record in Spring 2021 (please note that at this time we do not have funds available in our dept to support this–if the situation changes by March 1st, the Graduate Programs Director will send out an email).
- Are available to take a 2-credit training course offered in Fall 2020, tentatively scheduled for Friday mornings
- Are interested in a career that includes college teaching

Office of undergraduate education graduate teaching positions
The Office of Undergraduate Education (UGE) has multiple Masters-level Graduate Teaching Assistant positions available for the 2019-2020 academic year. These 20-hour-per-week positions support two different courses throughout the academic year. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until positions are filled. Preference will be given to applications received by March 15, 2020. Anticipated hire dates are August 1, 2020-May 31, 2021. - Current resume or CV
- Cover letter describing your interest in and qualifications for working as a GTA for UGE
- Name, contact information, and relationship for three references
Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Qualifications: Applicants must have earned 18 graduate credit hours prior to the first semester they will be teaching (Fall 2019) and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above throughout their appointment. GTAs are expected to register for at least six credits each semester. Continuance of the assistantship is contingent upon satisfactory performance in all course work as well as GTA duties. Successful applicants should also have:
- Enthusiasm to work with UNC Charlotte students and a strong desire to help them succeed.
- Ability to create and foster interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Experience with public speaking and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Experience working in a leadership and/or instructional (preferably educationally-focused) capacity.
- Flexibility and a willingness to work on both short- and long-term projects.
- Ability to multi-task and complete projects in a deadline-driven environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel
- Serve as Instructor of Record (IOR) for one section of UCOL 1200 (Freshman Seminar) in Fall 2019
- and two sections of UCOL 1300 (Academic Success Seminar) in Spring 2020.
- NOTE: UCOL 1200 is a three-credit-hour course covering college success, critical thinking, and career
- exploration topics, for first-year students who have not yet declared a major. UCOL 1300 is a twocredit-
- hour course covering academic and personal strategies to help students succeed at UNC
- Charlotte, for students experiencing academic difficulty and/or on academic probation.
- Prepare course syllabus, develop course materials, maintain course Canvas page, and evaluate
- student work.
- Hold regular office hours each week to meet one-on-one with students to address matters related to
- their academic and personal success.
- Attend weekly GTA development sessions throughout the fall and spring semesters.
- Attend Prospect for Success New Instructor Orientation in August 2019.
- Attend the 49er Rebound Instructors Institute in November 2019 and any of the optional Instructor
- Development Sessions as needed.
- After UCOL 1300 is complete (10 week course), assist with other UGE programs and projects as
- Participate in Day of Convocation in August 2019.
- Assist with other UGE events throughout the year as needed (e.g. workshops, campus presentations)
