Student Organizations

Association of Biological Sciences Graduate Students (ABSGS) –

ABSGS is an organization run by graduate students that are dedicated to supporting the professional development of our fellow graduate students. he mission of this student organization is to provide a platform for the professional development of biology graduate students and to promote scientific awareness through community involvement of its members. In addition to fostering the professional development of our students, we are also heavily involved in community outreach such as stream cleans, partnering with Habitat for Humanity, building community libraries, book and blanket drives, and much more. ABSGS supports graduate student academic and professional endeavors by hosting the annual Biological Sciences Symposium where students present research and earn acknowledgments and awards, and providing travel funding to support student attendance to outside conferences  ABSGS also hosts community service, outreach, and social events throughout the year such as Stream Clean, clothing drives, annual Faculty Student kickball game and cookout, Live-Action Clue/Halloween Party, Brewery meet-ups, and more.

Biology Graduate Student Outreach (BGO) –

A graduate-led effort to enrich biology education of underserved and underrepresented communities within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. BGO is specifically focused on promoting the value of biology and STEM through hands-on lab activities targeted towards middle and high school students. BGO offers teachers access to higher education through graduate students which, through collaboration, can be distilled for student activities beyond BGO lead coursework. BGO is currently partnered with the UNC Charlotte STEM Pre-College Program and Urban Educators for Change.

Career Ladders Program (CLP) –

Founded by graduate students in the Biological Sciences department, the program is a  peer-led career mentoring program for graduate students and postdocs pursuing any career pathway. Workshops and invited speakers in multiple professional disciplines present information o how to enter new career avenues and how to develop relationships and professional mentor experiences. CLP helps participants set aside a few hours each week to develop a framework for their job search.  Monthly meetings guide participants explore different career options by self-assessment, career research and skill identification, to informational interviewing and resume crafting.

American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) –

A student-led organization and nationally recognized branch under the premedical division of the American Medical Women’s Association. AMWA is an organization that focuses on advancing women in medicine, healthcare, STEM, and leadership fields.
